Folic Acid

  • Key nutrient for the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs) such as spina bifida.
  • Your body needs folic acid for the rapid cell growth that occurs during pregnancy.
  • Both Health Canada and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) recommend folic acid supplementation.

Health Canada

  • It is recommended that all women of childbearing age take a multivitamin containing 0.4 mg folic acid every day.

SOGC

  • Preconception: Take a daily multivitamin containing 0.4 mg to 1.0 mg of folic acid at least 3 months prior to conception.
  • Your babys neural tube starts to develop in the third week after conception, and pregnancy might not be known or confirmed by then. Therefore it is important to optimize your folic acid intake prior to conception to help prevent NTDs.
  • Pregnancy/postpartum/breastfeeding: Take a daily multivitamin containing 0.4 mg to 1.0 mg of folic acid.
  • Women who are at a higher risk due to obesity (BMI > 35 kg/m2), insulin-dependent diabetes, possible alcohol/drug abuse issues or a family history of NTDs should consult their doctor for recommended levels of folic acid supplementation.
